I was kind of thinking something similar I guess. I took a lot of time to chew on that question (and I really did take time to chew on it). My thinking is that maybe, because it is a Catholic icon, that it is more of a representation of the stations of the cross and so the bloody knees represent Jesus' falling on the road to crucifixion????
I was thinking along the same lines...I looked at a book of Mexican churches while I was there and noticed it in every one...I'll have to get my Catholic buddy, Mike to weigh in on this one..
